Statement by European Parliament President following decision of President von der Leyen to activate Article 324 of the EU Treaty and convene meeting on 8 July
“Negotiations begin now and the Parliament is ready. The decision of President von der Leyen to activate Article 324 of the EU Treaty highlights that all institutions are ready and committed to providing answers for European citizens. Today I received a mandate from the Conference of Presidents, made up of leaders of political groups in the Parliament, to negotiate the terms for an ambitious agreement.
“We will play our part in the discussions with Commission and the Council. It is important that this process starts before the meeting of the European Council on 17 and 18 July. This will ensure that Heads of State and Government are clear on the conditions the European Parliament needs to see to be able to vote in favour of an agreement.”
