Sassoli: “Thanks to Parliament’s work the new Commission is ready to start its job”

Statement by EP President David Sassoli following the European Parliament’s approval of the new European Commission

The European Parliament today voted in favour of the new European Commission under the Presidency of Ursula von der Leyen. Following the vote European Parliament President David Sassoli said:

“I would like to congratulate President von der Leyen on the approval of the new Commission. Over the last two months, the European Parliament has played its democratic role, providing real scrutiny of the Commission candidates, making sure they are ready for the job ahead. Europe faces many challenges and it is essential that we have a Commission ready to act on the issues that matter most to Europeans. Thanks to Parliament’s work, we have a Commission in place to do this.

“It is now time to get on with the job. The Parliament is ready to work with you to change Europe for the better. From leading the world in the fight against climate change to tackling the rising cost of living, Europeans want to see real action. We need to turn the promises of the last few months into results that improve people’s lives.”

On Sunday, December 1st, Ursula von der Leyen will begin her mandate as European Commission President, as will the new President of the European Council, Charles Michel. They will join European Parliament President David Sassoli and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde at the House of European History in Brussels for a ceremony marking the start of a new chapter for Europe. Further details on the event will follow.
