Parliament observes a minute of silence for the victims of the earthquakes in Venezuela

Strasbourg

Opening the Plenary Session in Strasbourg, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola said that Europe will continue to step up to help Venezuelans in their moment of need.

Our Parliament was deeply saddened to learn of the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela in recent weeks, killing thousands of people and leaving thousands more missing. The scale of devastation is shocking: apartment blocks flattened, critical infrastructure crushed, whole neighbourhoods reduced to rubble.

I am proud that Europe has stepped up to help Venezuelans in their moment of need. Through the Civil Protection Mechanism, we have mobilised aid from all across Europe to support recovery efforts and sent Europe’s bravest from different Member States to help.

Europe will continue to stand with Venezuela. This Parliament’s thoughts remain with those who are grieving and who are still waiting for news of loved ones.
