Parliament stands with the people of Iran

Brussels

President Roberta Metsola said that the European Parliament stands with the people of Iran and condemns the regime's indiscriminate attacks including on civilians in the Gulf States and across the region.

I know we are all focused on the situation in Iran, the Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz.

Let me underline that this Parliament has been clear in its condemnation of the Iranian regime that continues to oppress and kill its own people, sow instability and attack indiscriminately. This Parliament stands with the Iranian people and will keep up the pressure on their behalf.

Earlier this month, French soldier Arnaud Frion was killed by an Iranian drone while serving in Iraq on an anti-terror training mission. Thousands of Europeans have been stranded in the region. Let me say how grateful we are for all the efforts made by Member States and our partners in the Gulf to repatriate those who needed to return to Europe.

And I take this opportunity to condemn the Iranian regime’s continued, brutal and unacceptable attacks on civilians in the Gulf States and across the region. They must end.

I know that we will continue to do everything we can to push for de-escalation, dialogue, respect for international law, a swift conclusion to this conflict, and the right of the Iranian people to choose their own destiny in liberty.
