Opening the Plenary Session, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola said that the European Parliament will keep pushing for peace based on the principle of nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.
I know many will want to debate this later during this session, but I wanted to open this Plenary by saying that this House has stood with the people of Ukraine since Day one and we stand with them still today. We are hopeful and grateful for the good progress being made, with a new push in coordination with the United States towards peace. But in Europe, we know that this must be a real peace: with dignity, with justice and with freedom. And above all it must be based on the principle of nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. The coming days will be crucial, and I know that we will do all that we can to help find that elusive peace that we have always sought.
