Matul is-Sessjoni Plenarja fi Strasburgu, il-President tal-Parlament Ewropew Roberta Metsola ħabbret li l-Premju Sakharov 2025 għal-Libertà tal-Ħsieb ingħata lil Andrzej Poczobut mill-Belarus u lil Mzia Amaglobeli mill-Georgia.
Following the decision that was taken at today’s Conference of Presidents, it is my privilege to announce that the 2025 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded to Andrzej Poczobut from Belarus and Mzia Amaglobeli from Georgia. Both are journalists currently in prison on trumped-up charges, simply for doing their work, and for speaking out against injustice. Their courage has made them symbols of the struggle for freedom and democracy. This House stands with them, and with all those who continue to demand freedom. In a few moments, we will hear an address from Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Sergey Tihanovski. Their presence here today reminds us of what is at stake, and why this Parliament will never back down or look away from injustice. I also want to acknowledge the other Sakharov finalists, namely the journalists and aid workers in Palestine, and students in Serbia. I thank the political groups for their nominations, and the Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Human Rights Subcommittee, and Development Committee for their work. The award ceremony will take place here in Strasbourg during the December plenary session. Thank you.
