Wara d-deċiżjoni meħuda llum mill-Konferenza tal-Presidenti, il-President tal-Parlament Ewropew Roberta Metsola ħabbret li l-Premju Sakharov tal-2026 għal-Libertà tal-Ħsieb ingħata lill-Qorti Kriminali Internazzjonali u lill-uffiċjali tagħha.
Following today’s decision by the Conference of Presidents, I am able to announce that the 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded to the International Criminal Court and its officials. The European Union is built on respect for multilateralism and international institutions, and this prize recognises the important work of the Court in upholding international law and justice. I also want to use this moment to recognise Tundu Lissu from Tanzania, and Taraneh and Romina Rahimi on behalf of all those persecuted by the Iranian Islamic Regime. Tundu Lissu who is currently imprisoned, has worked for free and fair elections in Tanzania. Taraneh and Romina should have their whole lives ahead of them and yet one faces a death sentence and the other decades in prison for protesting. They are all now part of our Sakharov family. I thank the political groups for their nominations and decision, and the Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Development Committee and Human Rights Subcommittee for their work. The award ceremony will take place here in Strasbourg during the December plenary session. Thank you.
